Valve’s official Steam Deck OLED specifications confirm its 6nm 4-core APU, 8-CU RDNA 2 graphics, 50Wh battery, 1280×800 panel, and approximate 640 g weight. Lenovo’s current Legion Go 2 PSREF lists the Z2 Extreme, LPDDR5X-8000 memory, 74Wh battery, 1920×1200 OLED, dual USB4 ports, and approximately 920 g weight. AMD separately specifies the Ryzen Z2 Extreme as an 8-core/16-thread, 16-graphics-core part with a 15-35W configurable range.
Performance: Legion Go 2 wins, but resolution changes the story
The Legion Go 2 has the obvious hardware advantage. Its Z2 Extreme doubles the CPU core and thread count, doubles the graphics-core count, uses newer architectures, and can consume more than twice the Deck’s maximum APU power. That is not a small generational bump. It gives demanding games more room for 40-60 fps targets, raises the quality settings available at 800p, and makes CPU-heavy games, emulation, compiling shaders, and background Windows tasks less restrictive.
Independent testing helps anchor the gap. In Tom’s Hardware’s Legion Go 2 review, the Z2 Extreme model produced 66 fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 800p unplugged, 47 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at 800p unplugged using that game’s Steam Deck preset, and 65 fps in Red Dead Redemption 2 at 800p unplugged. Plugged-in 35W testing raised those results to 75, 57, and 80 fps respectively. Those numbers are not promises for every patch or driver; they show what the larger power envelope makes possible.
The important catch is that native resolution is not a fair default target. Legion Go 2’s 1920×1200 panel contains 2.25 times as many pixels as the Deck’s 1280×800 panel. At native 1200p, Tom’s Hardware recorded 42 fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider and 46 fps in Red Dead Redemption 2 unplugged. The machine remains faster, but some of its silicon is spent drawing pixels that are hard to distinguish during motion on an 8.8-inch screen.
For modern AAA games, a sensible Legion Go 2 setup is often 1280×800 or a 1200p output using FSR, XeSS, or the game’s own dynamic-resolution scaler. Use 1200p natively for older games, 2D games, desktop work, and titles with light GPU loads. Use 800p or upscaling when consistent frame time matters more than static sharpness.
Steam Deck OLED’s strength is predictability. Developers and community guides have spent years targeting its 800p screen and 15W ceiling. A game that holds 30 or 40 fps on Deck does so without asking you to decide among 20W, 25W, and 35W modes. The Deck cannot match Lenovo’s peak performance, but it wastes less of its limited GPU budget on an overly ambitious native resolution.

Both screens deliver the black levels, fast pixel response, and per-pixel contrast that make OLED worthwhile. The choice is therefore not “good OLED versus bad OLED.” It is big, sharp, variable-refresh OLED versus smaller OLED matched closely to the available performance.
Legion Go 2’s 8.8-inch panel is the showpiece. Its 1920×1200 resolution is visibly sharper for fine text than 1280×800, and the additional physical area makes subtitles, strategy-game interfaces, Windows menus, and split-screen play easier to see. Its 30-144Hz VRR range is especially useful because handheld frame rates fluctuate. A game moving between the 40s and 60s can remain smooth without the tearing or rigid cadence associated with a fixed refresh target.
Lenovo’s PSREF rates the display at 500 nits typical SDR brightness, 1,100 nits HDR peak, 100% DCI-P3, and DisplayHDR True Black 1000. Tom’s Hardware measured 445 nits in its test and very wide color volume. Measurements and manufacturer ratings use different methods, so treat them as complementary rather than contradictory.
Steam Deck OLED offers a 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR display, up to 90Hz, rated at 600 nits SDR and 1,000 nits HDR peak. It lacks VRR, but SteamOS makes refresh-rate and frame-limit pairing straightforward. Targets such as 30 fps at 60Hz, 40 fps at 80Hz, or 45 fps at 90Hz can deliver even pacing when a game holds the cap.
The Deck screen’s lower resolution is also an efficiency feature. Native 800p looks appropriate at this size and lets the APU devote its limited power to settings and stability. Legion Go 2 buyers should accept that the best-looking 1200p output will often be reconstructed from a lower internal resolution.

Battery life: capacity does not guarantee a universal winner
Legion Go 2 has a 74Wh battery against the Deck OLED’s 50Wh pack—a 48% capacity advantage. But its APU can draw up to 35W, its screen is larger, and Windows carries different background behavior. The final runtime depends more on the selected power profile and game than the battery label alone.
Notebookcheck’s Legion Go 2 battery testing found about 2.5 hours of gaming in Performance mode, just under three hours in Balanced, a little over five hours in Silent, and roughly 1 hour 17 minutes at full Manual-mode power. Its standardized Cyberpunk 2077 run lasted 2 hours 23 minutes. Those results reveal the Lenovo’s central trade-off: it can be a reasonably long-running low-power handheld or a fast 35W handheld, but not both simultaneously.
Notebookcheck’s Steam Deck OLED testing recorded as much as about five hours of gaming depending on load and two hours in a demanding Cyberpunk 2077 test with high quality, maximum brightness, and HDR. Valve gives a broader official estimate of 3-12 hours because content varies enormously.
In a demanding game at each device’s practical performance setting, expect both to live in the “bring a charger for a long trip” category. In lighter games, the Deck’s efficient APU and lower ceiling make it easier to get good runtime without carefully tuning Windows. The Lenovo can stretch its larger battery, but doing so means abandoning the performance advantage you paid for.
Battery winner by situation
- AAA game at maximum useful performance: neither; both are short-session machines, and Lenovo can drain faster at 35W.
- Indie game with a deliberate low-power cap: Legion Go 2 can exploit its 74Wh capacity, although its extra weight remains.
- Set-it-and-play portable use: Steam Deck OLED is easier to manage and harder to accidentally run at a battery-hostile power level.

Steam Deck OLED weighs about 640 g. Legion Go 2 weighs about 920 g with its controllers. A 280 g difference is roughly a 44% increase over the Deck’s weight, and you feel it far sooner than you notice a benchmark chart during a long unsupported session.
Valve’s grips, full-size sticks, four rear buttons, gyro, and two large trackpads create one integrated control surface. The trackpads are unusually valuable in strategy games, launchers, desktop mode, and older PC games designed around a mouse. The sticks use capacitive touch for gyro activation, while Steam Input provides deep per-game mapping. Lenovo answers with flexibility. Its TrueStrike controllers detach, the screen has a full-width kickstand, and the right controller can work in an upright FPS mode. The controls use Hall-effect sticks, include assignable buttons, and add a small touchpad and mouse wheel. At a desk, airplane tray, kitchen table, or hotel nightstand, you can prop up the screen and hold only the controllers. That removes the 920 g chassis from your wrists and turns the Lenovo’s biggest weakness into a non-issue.
The Lenovo is also better prepared for shared tabletop play or an external controller. Steam Deck OLED can dock and use external controllers, but it needs a separate stand or dock and its own controls remain attached.

Windows 11 on Legion Go 2 runs the familiar PC launchers directly and is the safer choice for native PC Game Pass, broad anti-cheat support, work applications, mods, and peripherals with Windows-only utilities. Legion Space adds controller-accessible performance settings and a game launcher. Windows itself is also less awkward on handhelds than it was at the Go 2’s launch: Microsoft’s Xbox Mode announcement describes a controller-optimized full-screen interface, aggregated library, and reduced background distractions, with availability expanding by market.
Windows remains Windows underneath. Permission dialogs, installers, small desktop controls, driver packages, and occasional focus problems still appear. The Legion’s touchpad, touchscreen, detachable mouse-style controller, and larger screen make those moments more manageable, but they do not eliminate them.
Software-experience winner: Steam Deck OLED. Compatibility winner: Legion Go 2. Your library settles this category: Steam-first and Deck-compatible favors Valve; PC Game Pass and multi-launcher use favors Lenovo.
Portability, docking, and desktop use
Steam Deck OLED is the easier object to travel with. It is lighter, its charger is smaller, and the integrated design has no controller rails or separate pieces to manage. It is still too large for most pockets, but it fits a conventional handheld case and is less punishing in a packed shoulder bag.
Legion Go 2 is a portable computer in the literal sense, but the device, case, and 65W charger occupy more space. In exchange it is the stronger tiny-desktop system. Two USB4 ports let you charge from one side while connecting a display, dock, or SSD to the other. The kickstand works without an accessory, and 32GB of shared memory on the compared configuration gives Windows and heavier multitasking more breathing room.
Both can drive external displays. Do not confuse supported video-output resolution with sensible game-rendering resolution: a handheld can output a 4K desktop while still needing 1080p or below for a demanding game. The Steam Deck OLED’s value comes from integration. You receive the OLED panel, a polished gaming OS, good controls, a carrying case, and enough performance for a large library without needing an additional Windows license, controller, or stand. It is not cheap in every region, and Valve pricing varies geographically, so verify the official storefront available to you.
The Z2 Extreme/32GB Legion Go 2 was reviewed at $1,349.99, while lower configurations use different processors or memory. Listings have moved substantially since launch. That makes an exact “frames per dollar” calculation age quickly, but the decision rule remains stable: the Lenovo must solve a problem the Deck cannot solve to justify its premium.
Good reasons to pay more include:
- a must-play library that requires Windows or native PC Game Pass;
- a real need for 32GB of shared memory or stronger CPU performance;
- frequent 800p AAA gaming above the Deck’s performance ceiling;
- a strong preference for an 8.8-inch VRR screen;
- routine tabletop play with detached controls;
- regular use as a Windows mini PC with two USB4 ports.
Weak reasons include “future-proofing” without specific games, chasing 144Hz in AAA titles that cannot reach it, or assuming 1200p must always look better while moving. A cheaper machine used daily is better value than an impressive machine whose weight keeps it in a drawer.
